Client Spotlight: Norma

Meet Norma, a remarkable 96-year-old war widow and valued client of Velan Health. Norma became part of the Velan Health family in 2022 when she was referred to us by a discharge planner at the local hospital.

At 21, Norma married Gordon, a truck driver who delivered bread. She worked at a milk bar called Melba in Brisbane, where they first met. Together, they had two children, Barbara and Geoff, and built a life on the outskirts of Brisbane before retiring to Palm Beach on the southern end of the Gold Coast.

Norma and Gordon shared a love for ballroom dancing, which they enjoyed together until Gordon, a returned service member, sadly passed away 20 years ago. Despite this loss, Norma has continued to live independently in their family home with the support of Velan Health.

These days, Norma keeps herself busy by reading, listening to the radio, and enjoying conversations over coffee. She loves to have a chat and appreciates the companionship and care provided by Velan Health.

Norma receives care three times a day, including assistance with meal preparation, medication management, personal care, pain management, clinical support, falls education, and social interaction. She also benefits from overnight assistance every night, ensuring she feels safe and secure in her home. Additionally, she receives weekly domestic assistance to help with household tasks.
